San Juan College PTA Program Overview
San Juan College in Farmington, New Mexico, offers a top-tier Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA), preparing students for one of the nation’s fastest-growing healthcare careers. This two-year program can be completed on-campus or through an online/hybrid format—ideal for busy adults and parents. Both options require about five semesters to finish and include two full-time clinical externships plus hands-on practice at SJC’s state-of-the-art Health Sciences Simulation Center.
The curriculum covers physical therapy fundamentals, therapeutic exercises, patient care procedures, and professional skills needed to support licensed physical therapists with patients across all ages—from infants to seniors. Students gain experience working with real patients during their externships at local hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, and more throughout San Juan County.
With small class sizes (20 students per cohort), individualized attention from experienced faculty is guaranteed. Tuition is affordable—approximately $6,710 for New Mexico residents—and many qualify for free tuition via the NM Opportunity Scholarship. Graduates are eligible to take the National Physical Therapist Assistant Licensing Examination; SJC is one of only four CAPTE-accredited PTA programs statewide.
BLS projects 19% growth through 2033 with a median salary over $64K locally. Many graduates remain in northwest New Mexico’s vibrant healthcare community or advance into higher-level health professions—including DPT programs—all while making a difference close to home.
