Elgin Community College PTA Program Overview
Elgin Community College (ECC), located in Elgin, Illinois, offers a highly respected Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) program that can be completed in just two years (five semesters). Students earn an Associate of Applied Science degree after completing 71-74 credit hours, which includes both classroom and lab work as well as three hands-on clinical rotations at local partner clinics. ECC’s state-of-the-art facilities provide students with access to the latest equipment used in real-world physical therapy settings.
The PTA curriculum covers anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, biomechanics, neuroscience, communication skills, ethics, and behavioral sciences. About 75% of coursework is didactic or lab-based; the remaining 25% focuses on supervised clinical education—giving students vital experience before graduation. Many ECC PTA students receive job offers directly from their internship sites.
Outcomes for graduates are excellent: over the past fifteen years ECC has maintained a strong record of all graduates passing the state licensure exam and boasts over 90% employment rates annually. The field outlook is very positive due to rising demand driven by an aging population; approximately 25,500 new jobs are projected each year nationally.
Tuition at ECC remains affordable compared to four-year schools and financial aid—including scholarships—is available. As part of Kane County’s WIOA initiative for career training grants may also be accessible for qualifying residents. Applications are accepted once per year by March 15 for fall admission only.
