Henry Ford College PTA Program Overview
Henry Ford College’s Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) program in Dearborn, Michigan, offers an Associate in Applied Science degree designed to prepare students for immediate employment as entry-level PTAs. Established in 1990 and accredited by CAPTE, the program blends classroom instruction with hands-on laboratory work and extensive clinical experience at local physical therapy facilities. The final semester is dedicated to a full-time externship (40 hours per week), providing valuable real-world exposure.
The curriculum consists of at least 73 credit hours, including core PTA courses such as Therapeutic Techniques, Kinesiology, Orthopedics, Neurological Rehabilitation, and two clinical externships. Support courses cover anatomy & physiology, physics, healthcare computers, English composition and math. Admission is competitive; applicants must have a minimum college GPA of 2.8 across 12 credits or more (excluding developmental classes), specific prerequisite coursework completed with high grades within five years prior to admission—including medical terminology—and verified observation hours under a licensed PTA.
HFC boasts strong outcomes: recent graduation rates average above 77%, ultimate licensure pass rates approach 85%, first-time exam pass rates are over 73%, and job placement has been consistently at or near 100%.
Tuition is affordable compared to other metro Detroit programs—plus HFC maintains transfer agreements with area universities like Eastern Michigan University for those interested in pursuing bachelor’s degrees later on.
Located just outside Detroit’s city limits on Evergreen Road in Dearborn—a hub for Southeast Michigan healthcare employers—the program provides excellent access to diverse clinical settings throughout Metro Detroit.
