Mercer County Community College PTA Program Overview
Mercer County Community College (MCCC) offers a well-respected Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) program, leading to an Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree. The curriculum is designed for both recent high school graduates and adult learners, welcoming a diverse student population from across Mercer County and the surrounding central New Jersey area.
The PTA program at MCCC requires approximately 68-70 credit hours, blending classroom learning with hands-on laboratory work and clinical experiences in local healthcare settings. Coursework covers anatomy, physiology, therapeutic exercise, patient care skills, kinesiology, as well as ethics and professional issues specific to physical therapy. Students progress through pre-professional and professional phases; admission into the latter is competitive.
Accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE), MCCC’s PTA program consistently meets or exceeds national standards. Graduates are eligible to sit for the National Physical Therapy Exam for PTAs—a gateway to licensure throughout New Jersey.
Tuition remains affordable compared to four-year institutions—especially beneficial for Mercer County residents—and financial aid options are available. With growing demand locally for skilled PTAs due to an aging population and expanded rehabilitation services in Trenton-area hospitals and clinics, career prospects remain strong.
Unique among regional programs is MCCC’s commitment to diversity, community partnerships with area providers like Capital Health System, robust student support services—including advisement and success coaching—and flexible campus locations in West Windsor and downtown Trenton.
