Pima Medical Institute – San Marcos PTA Program Overview
The Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) program at Pima Medical Institute – San Marcos offers an Associate of Occupational Science degree, designed to be completed in approximately 18 months (75 weeks). This hands-on, on-campus program includes 1,586 total hours and prepares students for a rewarding career helping patients recover from injuries or illnesses. Students learn under experienced instructors and gain practical skills through clinical externships with local healthcare providers—a valuable opportunity to work directly with real patients and network with professionals in the North County San Diego area.
Coursework covers therapeutic exercises, gait training, pain management techniques, patient observation and documentation. Upon graduation, students are eligible to apply for the National Physical Therapy Examination for PTAs—a key step toward licensure. The curriculum is tailored to meet California’s licensure requirements; moving out of state during the program may affect eligibility.
Pima’s Career Services team supports graduates with job placement assistance—important given that demand for physical therapist assistants is expected to grow much faster than average due to an aging population and rising chronic conditions like diabetes. While costs can vary by campus year-to-year, detailed tuition information is available upon request or via their website.
Unique among PTA programs locally, Pima also offers an online Bachelor of Science completion option for working PTAs ready to advance their careers—all while benefiting from the supportive community at the San Marcos campus just off Highway 78. For more details or admissions guidance, call (800) 477‑7462.
