Springfield Technical Community College PTA Program Overview
The Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) program at Springfield Technical Community College (STCC) is a well-established, two-year Associate in Science degree that prepares students for rewarding careers as PTAs. Accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education, STCC’s PTA program stands out as one of the oldest accredited programs in the nation and benefits from its location within Building 20’s modern clinic space on campus.
Students complete approximately 65-70 credit hours covering subjects like anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, therapeutic exercise, disease processes, psychology, and legal/ethical issues. The curriculum follows American Physical Therapy Association guidelines and blends classroom instruction with hands-on clinical experience—including nearly a semester of supervised practice at local healthcare facilities and additional training opportunities right on campus at STCC’s own Rehabilitation Clinic.
Graduates are equipped to assist licensed physical therapists in providing care for patients recovering from burns, amputations, spinal cord injuries or managing chronic conditions such as diabetes or obesity—needs especially relevant given western Massachusetts’ aging population. Career prospects are excellent: according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment for PTAs is projected to grow 29% through 2029.
STCC emphasizes small class sizes and supportive faculty who foster critical thinking skills and professional development. Tuition is among the most affordable regionally—a significant advantage for local residents seeking high-quality allied health education without excessive debt—making it an accessible pathway into this rapidly growing field.
