Surry Community College PTA Program Overview
Surry Community College’s Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) program, located in Dobson, North Carolina, offers a comprehensive Associate in Applied Science degree designed to prepare students for rewarding careers as PTAs. The program begins each Fall Semester and spans five semesters (76 credit hours), blending classroom instruction with hands-on clinical experience at local healthcare facilities throughout Surry County and the surrounding region.
Applicants must complete the TEAS Test and meet additional requirements before applying; however, taking the test does not guarantee admission. All application materials are due by May 31st for Fall entry. The curriculum covers foundational courses like Medical Terminology, Anatomy & Physiology I & II, Psychology, Functional Anatomy, Therapeutic Exercise, multiple physical therapy procedures classes (I-IV), specialized topics such as geriatrics and pediatrics for PTAs, professional interactions, clinical education rotations totaling over 600 hours of supervised practice—and more.
Recent outcomes highlight strong performance: an average graduation rate of 75%, first-time licensure pass rates averaging over 80%, ultimate pass rates at 100%, and a consistent employment rate of 100% among graduates who met all criteria.
Estimated costs can be reviewed on the PTA Student Financial Fact Sheet; financial aid is available.
Unique to Surry’s program is its commitment to community outreach—students participate in service-learning projects addressing health disparities locally. Graduates are eligible for state licensure exams and find employment across hospitals, rehab centers, schools—even rural clinics serving Mount Airy or Elkin residents—making this a vital resource for northwest North Carolina’s healthcare workforce needs.
