Herkimer County Community College PTA Program Overview
Herkimer County Community College’s Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) program offers an Associate in Applied Science degree, equipping students with the knowledge and hands-on experience needed to help patients regain functional skills. This two-year program is highly respected—boasting a board exam pass rate consistently above 90% and a remarkable 100% employment rate for graduates over the past twenty years.
Students complete approximately 64 credit hours covering core PTA courses, anatomy and physiology, psychology, clinical kinesiology, pathology, therapeutic exercise, and more. The curriculum includes three full-time supervised clinical fieldwork experiences in diverse settings such as acute care hospitals or outpatient clinics. These placements may require travel throughout Central New York due to limited local options.
Admission is competitive; applicants must meet specific academic criteria and complete at least 15 hours of clinical observation before starting classes. Tuition remains affordable compared to four-year institutions—a key advantage for many Herkimer students—and special fees cover liability insurance during fieldwork.
The PTA Club provides opportunities for leadership development and community service. Graduates are prepared not only for immediate licensure but also encouraged toward lifelong learning through continuing education. Employer satisfaction surveys reflect perfect scores across all skill categories.
Located near the scenic Mohawk Valley region—with easy access to Utica-Rome—the college serves both local residents and those from surrounding areas seeking quality healthcare careers close to home.
