LaGuardia Community College PTA Program Overview
LaGuardia Community College, located in Long Island City, Queens, offers an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA). Accredited by CAPTE, this program is well-respected within the CUNY system and prepares students to become skilled rehabilitation professionals ready to serve New York’s diverse communities. The PTA curriculum requires 68 credits: 26 credits from Pathways Common Core courses—including English composition, math/statistics, psychology, and anatomy & physiology—and 42 credits focused on health sciences and physical therapy core skills.
Admission is competitive; students first complete a pre-clinical phase before applying for candidacy into the technical phase. Key courses must be completed with at least a 2.5 GPA. The technical phase covers topics like clinical kinesiology, orthopedic therapeutic exercise, neuromuscular rehab techniques, legal/ethical issues in PT practice, and hands-on clinical education experiences across NYC’s varied healthcare settings.
Graduates are eligible to sit for the National Physical Therapy Exam—recent pass rates have reached up to 100%. Career prospects are strong locally due to demand in hospitals, clinics, schools and home care agencies throughout New York City. Tuition follows standard CUNY rates; financial aid options such as FAFSA or NYS Excelsior Scholarship may apply.
Unique features include LaGuardia’s focus on real-world training with local partners and its multicultural campus environment—a perfect fit for those who want meaningful work serving one of America’s most vibrant urban populations.
