Kent State University (Exp) PTA Program Overview
The Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) program at Kent State University’s East Liverpool and Ashtabula campuses offers an Associate of Applied Science degree in Physical Therapist Assistant Technology. This accredited, two-year program prepares students for licensure as PTAs, combining classroom learning with hands-on clinical experiences at local healthcare facilities.
Students complete approximately 65-70 credit hours over four sequential semesters. The curriculum includes lecture, lab, seminar, and practicum courses focusing on therapeutic exercise, patient care techniques, communication skills, legal documentation practices, and ethical standards. Students typically spend three to five days per week on campus or in clinical settings.
Kent State’s PTA program stands out for its state-of-the-art laboratories and experienced faculty who are dedicated to student success. A unique feature is the ATC+PTA Athletic Trainers Transition concentration—offered primarily online—which allows board-certified athletic trainers to become PTAs in as little as 15 months through a blend of online coursework and short on-campus labs.
Tuition is competitively priced compared to other Ohio programs; financial aid and scholarships are available for eligible students. Graduates have excellent job prospects due to rising demand from an aging population needing rehabilitation services—especially across Northeast Ohio communities like East Liverpool.
Upon graduation—and after passing the National Physical Therapy Examination—students are qualified for rewarding careers assisting physical therapists in hospitals, outpatient clinics, home health agencies or nursing care facilities throughout Ohio and beyond.
