Midlands Technical College PTA Program Overview
The Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) program at Midlands Technical College (MTC), located in Columbia, South Carolina, offers an Associate in Applied Science degree designed to prepare students for a rewarding healthcare career. The curriculum combines general education prerequisites and specialized technical courses—students must complete all prerequisites with a minimum 2.9 GPA before being considered for the selective interview process into the PTA program’s technical portion.
The full-time program is typically completed over five semesters and includes approximately 69 credit hours. Coursework covers anatomy, patient care skills, therapeutic exercises, and clinical rotations arranged through partnerships with local hospitals, rehab centers, schools, private clinics, and long-term care facilities across the Midlands region.
Unique to MTC is its dedicated lab space in Lexington Hall on the Airport Campus where students gain hands-on experience prior to clinical externships. All applicants must attend an information session and complete at least 20 hours of observation—including time in acute hospital settings—to qualify for admission consideration.
Tuition costs are competitive; as of 2023-24 estimates,South Carolina residents pay about $215 per credit hour plus fees (financial aid is available).
Graduates are eligible to sit for national licensure exams thanks toCAPTE accreditation.
With growing demand for PTAs statewide—especially around Columbia’s major medical hubs—graduates enjoy strong job prospects and entry-level salaries averaging $48K–$55K locally.
