South University – Columbia PTA Program Overview
The Associate of Science in Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) program at South University – Columbia offers a comprehensive curriculum designed to prepare students for entry-level roles as PTAs. The program spans five academic quarters, combining daytime lectures and labs on campus with 660 hours of clinical education across three placements. Clinical experiences are integrated early and throughout the curriculum, allowing students to apply classroom knowledge in real-world settings such as hospitals, nursing homes, and outpatient centers around Columbia.
To enter the professional phase, applicants must complete prerequisite coursework (with a minimum 2.75 GPA), submit TEAS scores, pass background checks and drug screenings, provide documentation of observation hours in physical therapy settings, and meet technical standards required for safe patient care. The PTA program is accredited by CAPTE and meets licensure requirements for South Carolina; however, passing the national certification exam is required before practice.
For the 2022-2023 year, the graduation rate was an impressive 100%, with a graduate employment rate also at 100%. However, first-time NPTE pass rates were lower (28.58%), so prospective students should be prepared for rigorous preparation for licensure exams.
Located conveniently near downtown Columbia—close to major healthcare employers—the campus provides access to diverse clinical sites throughout central South Carolina. Costs vary; interested applicants can review detailed financial fact sheets online or contact admissions directly at ((803) 935-9725) for personalized guidance on tuition and aid options.
