New River Community and Technical College PTA Program Overview
The Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) program at New River Community and Technical College, located in Beaver, West Virginia, offers an Associate of Applied Science degree designed to prepare students for immediate entry into the workforce. The program spans five semesters—beginning each fall—and combines classroom learning with three off-campus clinical experiences throughout southern West Virginia. Only 20 students are admitted annually through a selective process that considers GPA and prerequisite coursework.
Students complete required courses in anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, and physical therapy techniques while also engaging in interprofessional activities with other allied health programs. The curriculum is aligned with regional healthcare needs and provides hands-on training at local clinical sites. Graduates are eligible to sit for the National Physical Therapy Examination-PTA; recent cohorts have achieved pass rates above 85% and job placement rates exceeding 90% within six months.
Tuition is affordable compared to many institutions, especially for West Virginia residents who may qualify for free tuition through the WV Invests Grant. Additional costs include fees related to background checks, uniforms, travel expenses for clinical rotations around Raleigh County and beyond.
New River CTC’s PTA program stands out due to its small class sizes—which foster close faculty mentorship—and strong ties with area employers. Accredited by CAPTE, this program equips graduates to meet the growing demand for skilled PTAs across Appalachia’s hospitals, clinics, schools and rehabilitation centers.
