Pierpont Community & Technical College PTA Program Overview
Pierpont Community & Technical College, located at the Gaston Caperton Center in Clarksburg, is home to West Virginia’s first accredited Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) program. Since 1997, this respected program has prepared students for rewarding careers helping patients regain mobility and function after illness or injury. Students pursue an Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree, typically requiring around two years of full-time study.
The curriculum begins with foundational courses in biological sciences, English composition, medical terminology, and psychology before moving into specialized PTA classes. Admission is open but competitive—after completing prerequisite courses with a “C” or better and maintaining at least a 2.0 GPA, the top 20 students based on GPA are selected for the core cohort each spring.
Graduates are eligible to sit for the national licensing exam; recent pass rates have been excellent—100% ultimate pass rate in both 2024 and employment placement within six months is also consistently high. The median annual salary for PTAs in West Virginia is over $46,400 according to state data.
Students benefit from small class sizes and clinical experiences throughout North Central WV hospitals and rehab centers. Pierpont’s location offers easy access from I-79 as well as affordable tuition compared to four-year universities nearby. Many graduates choose to continue their education in allied health fields like Exercise Science or Health Administration—a testament to Pierpont’s strong academic foundation and community connections across West Virginia healthcare settings.
