Pima Medical Institute – Tucson PTA Program Overview
The Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) program at Pima Medical Institute’s Tucson campus offers an Associate of Occupational Science degree designed to prepare students for rewarding careers in healthcare. The program takes approximately 18 months to complete and requires on-campus attendance, with a total of 1,586 hours over about 75 weeks. Students learn through a blend of classroom instruction and hands-on clinical externships—an approach that ensures graduates are job-ready.
Coursework covers essential subjects like anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, disease processes, therapeutic exercises, medical terminology, ethics and law. Clinical practicums throughout the curriculum provide real-world experience working with patients under supervision in local Tucson hospitals and clinics—a unique advantage given Southern Arizona’s diverse patient population.
Upon graduation from the Tucson campus PTA program, students are eligible to sit for the National Physical Therapy Examination required for licensure as a physical therapist assistant. Career prospects are strong both locally and nationally; according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, demand for PTAs is growing much faster than average due to aging populations and increased need for rehabilitative care.
Pima Medical Institute supports its students beyond graduation with career services such as resume building and interview preparation. For those interested in advancing further after starting their careers in Tucson or elsewhere in Arizona, PMI also offers an online Bachelor of Science completion pathway specifically tailored for practicing PTAs looking to move up within their field. Tuition costs can be offset by federal financial aid programs available through PMI’s admissions office.
