Sacramento City College PTA Program Overview
The Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) program at Sacramento City College offers an Associate in Science (A.S.) degree designed to prepare students for licensure and a rewarding career as a PTA. Accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE), this program trains students to assist physical therapists in treating patients with movement, strength, and coordination disorders—helping improve function, decrease pain, and foster independence.
Students complete prerequisites, general education courses (up to 33 units), and specialized PTA coursework totaling around $4,000–$5,000 including fees for books, uniforms, immunizations, insurance, CPR/First Aid training, and licensing exams. Course fees are $46 per unit; many students qualify for financial aid such as the California College Promise Grant.
Coursework covers therapeutic exercise techniques, administration of modalities like heat or electrical stimulation, ambulation training (helping people walk safely), transfers between surfaces (such as bed-to-wheelchair), patient assessment skills under supervision of licensed PTs—and emphasizes teamwork within diverse healthcare environments found throughout Sacramento’s extensive hospital networks and clinics. Students must plan for travel to clinical sites across Northern California; some may need temporary housing during full-time clinical rotations.
Graduates are eligible to apply for state licensure after passing required examinations. SCC’s PTA grads find employment locally—in hospitals like UC Davis Medical Center—or regionally across California’s growing healthcare sector. With strong job demand projected by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and robust support from local employers who value SCC-trained PTAs’ hands-on experience and cultural competence serving Sacramento’s diverse community—the outlook is bright!
