South Texas College PTA Program Overview
South Texas College’s Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) program offers an Associate of Applied Science degree designed to prepare students for licensure and a rewarding career as a PTA. The full-time, daytime program begins each fall at the Pecan campus in McAllen—an ideal location in the Rio Grande Valley, close to regional hospitals and clinics where students gain hands-on experience.
The curriculum spans 63 credit hours over five semesters, including prerequisites such as Anatomy & Physiology I and Introduction to Physical Therapy. Core courses cover functional anatomy, patient care skills, pathophysiology, neurology, rehabilitation techniques, and three clinical practicums that provide real-world training across diverse healthcare settings.
Admission is competitive: applicants must attend an information session (held virtually on Thursdays), complete prerequisite courses with a “B” or better, achieve strong HESI A2 exam scores (75%+), meet GPA standards (3.0 minimum), pass background checks/drug screens, show proof of immunizations—and document 50 volunteer/work hours under PT/PTA supervision in varied settings.
Program outcomes are exceptional: recent classes boast graduation rates above 85%, with 100% first-time licensure exam pass rates and employment within one year post-graduation.
Tuition remains affordable compared to other Texas programs; financial aid is available through STC Student Financial Services.
Graduates work locally in hospitals like DHR Health or outpatient clinics serving South Texas’ growing population. Unique highlights include small class sizes (~20 annually)and robust local partnerships for clinical placements—making this CAPTE-accredited program both accessible and highly respected throughout the region.
