Tyler Junior College PTA Program Overview
The Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) program at Tyler Junior College (TJC) in Tyler, Texas, offers a comprehensive Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree designed to prepare students for immediate entry into the workforce. This five-semester program blends rigorous classroom instruction with hands-on learning through three six-week clinical rotations under the supervision of licensed physical therapists or PTAs. With around 60 credit hours required, courses cover topics such as anatomy and physiology, kinesiology, therapeutic exercise, and patient care skills.
One unique aspect of TJC’s PTA program is its close-knit cohort model—students often form lasting bonds while benefiting from small class sizes and personalized faculty attention. Service projects that support local nonprofits are also an integral part of the experience.
Outcomes for graduates are outstanding: recent cohorts have achieved an average graduation rate of 83%, a first-time National Physical Therapy Exam (NPTE) pass rate of 100%, and a job placement rate of 100%. Upon completion, students are eligible to sit for the NPTE to become licensed PTAs in Texas.
Estimated costs are lower than many four-year institutions—making TJC a smart choice—and financial aid or scholarships may be available. The career outlook is excellent; median pay exceeds $59K per year with projected growth far above average nationally. Located among historic buildings and oak trees in East Texas’ largest city outside Dallas-Fort Worth, TJC offers both quality education and vibrant campus life just minutes from downtown Tyler.
