Allegany College of Maryland PTA Program Overview
Allegany College of Maryland (ACM) in Cumberland, MD offers a well-respected Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) program designed to prepare students for rewarding careers helping others restore movement and improve quality of life. The PTA program awards an Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree and follows a flexible 1+1 model: students complete general education courses first, then progress to specialized clinical coursework.
The curriculum covers anatomy, patient care skills, therapeutic modalities like electrotherapy and aquatic therapy, manual techniques, and health promotion. Students learn hands-on in ACM’s Allied Health facilities under experienced faculty. The full program requires approximately 68-70 credit hours over two years.
Admissions are competitive; applicants need at least a 2.5 GPA in prerequisite courses plus volunteer experience. Program costs are affordable compared to four-year schools—tuition is about $140 per credit for Maryland residents (2024), with financial aid available.
Graduates consistently achieve high pass rates on the national licensure exam—92% average over recent years—and enjoy excellent job placement within one year of graduation (100%). PTAs work throughout Western Maryland hospitals, rehab centers, schools, sports medicine clinics and beyond—a growing field locally due to an aging population.
Unique features include small class sizes fostering close mentorships and strong ties with area healthcare employers. ACM’s location near the scenic Appalachian Mountains also means plenty of outdoor recreation when you’re not studying!
