Frederick Community College PTA Program Overview
The Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) program at Frederick Community College (FCC) in Frederick, Maryland, is a selective admissions program designed to prepare students for immediate entry into the workforce as licensed PTAs. Accredited by CAPTE as of April 2024, FCC’s PTA program combines classroom instruction, hands-on laboratory practice, and over 600 hours of supervised clinical experiences across diverse healthcare settings—including local hospitals and clinics serving the Frederick area.
Students complete approximately 70 credits over six semesters (about two years), with prerequisites including college-level biology and statistics. Progression requires a “C” or better in general education courses and a “B” or higher in technical coursework. Upon graduation, students are eligible to sit for the National Physical Therapy Examination for licensure.
Tuition is affordable compared to many four-year institutions; Frederick County Public School students may qualify for free tuition through dual enrollment. Financial aid options are also available.
Graduates enter a field with strong demand—median pay is $64,080/year nationally—and can work locally in hospitals, outpatient clinics, schools, nursing homes or rehabilitation centers. Unique aspects include small cohort sizes (25 per year), personalized advising from faculty like Dr. Amelia Iams and Ashley Dicks, community-focused values emphasizing diversity and integrity, and close ties to regional employers.
For more information on application requirements or advising support at FCC’s Opossumtown Pike campus—or virtually—visit www.frederick.edu/pta-program or contact aiams@frederick.edu.
