Missouri Western State University PTA Program Overview
Missouri Western State University’s Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) program offers a two-year Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree designed to prepare students for licensure and rewarding careers in physical therapy. Located in St. Joseph, MO—just north of Kansas City—the program combines classroom instruction, hands-on laboratory experiences, and full-time clinical internships at local healthcare facilities like Mosaic Life Care.
The curriculum totals 72 credit hours: nine general education credits, 50 PTA-specific courses taught by licensed PTs and PTAs, and 13 credits dedicated to immersive clinical education. Clinical rotations are robust, with students completing internships during both summers and the final spring semester—ensuring real-world skills development.
Admission is competitive; only one cohort of up to 20 students begins each fall. Applicants must apply separately from university admission by March 1st. The small class size fosters close faculty mentorship within Murphy Hall on campus.
Outcomes are strong: recent graduation rates average over 85%, ultimate NPTE pass rates exceed 93%, and employment rates reach nearly 100% within a year of graduation. Tuition is affordable compared to regional options, with scholarships available through MWSU’s School of Nursing & Health Professions.
Graduates are eligible for licensure across all U.S. states due to CAPE accreditation. Missouri Western stands out not just for its outcomes but also its supportive environment—a hallmark reflected in alumni success stories who now serve as leaders or instructors locally and beyond St. Joseph’s vibrant health community.
